Artist: Substance Abuse ft Aceyalone Release: Bridges Digital: 2 x EP Packages - May 2019: ‘North Street’ Remixes EP/ ‘Blue Room’ Remixes EP Vinyl 7”: June 2019 Ramrock Red Records is proud to present the forthcoming single ‘Bridges’ as a vinyl 7” and 2 x Remix EP package from L.A. hip hop duo Substance Abuse aka Eso Tre and Subz. ‘Bridges’ features Aceyalone, founding member of legendary Freestyle Fellowship, a collective who brought an improvisational focus to the Los Angeles underground hip-hop scene in the 1990s. Eso says "Subz came up with the idea for 'Bridges' because he felt we needed to do a song about unity in these increasingly divisive times we live in. Our goal was to create a track that was jazzy, positive, and upbeat but with a message that the modern audiences could relate to, following on in the tradition of our heroes ‘The Native Tongues’. To deliver that message, we couldn't think of a better MC than Aceyalone to bring on board. He has a special talent for creating dope songs built off of a single metaphor and he completes our vision." Many of you will already know the original version which is a sublime, soulful, future hip hop classic referencing the very best of the jazzy undertones from the ‘golden era’ groups like De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Jungle Brothers and their ilk. It will be featured on the limited 7” vinyl as the A side. The ‘North Street’ Vocal Remix with Beedle, Morris & Wallace flexing their considerable production and composition muscle, come up with an original musical score to run ‘Bridges’ over, paying respect to Ramsey Lewis, Ronnie Foster and Bob James which will also feature on vinyl as well as digital. Other tracks on the digital ‘North Street’ Remixes EP, to accompany the ‘North Street’ Vocal Remix, will be the Piano Dub and Instrumental. On the second digital EP entitled ‘Blue Room’ digital EP, Substance Abuse showcase no fewer than 4 other remixes with Street, Clean + Instrumental versions to complete their debut UK outing. For all things Ramrock vinyl, check out the Ramrock Bandcamp page. There will be a pre-order link for the Substance Abuse 7” coming soon. Check back regularly. Mic Crenshaw and Kool Chief Rocker are LOAD B (Last Of A Dying Breed), presenting the music video for "Sunlight", the new single from their forthcoming album Brink Of Distinction. The video was shot between Arusha, Tanzania and Portland, where both emcees currently reside. The track is produced by Cincinnati beatsmith Theory Hazit - who also produced their previous single "Paradox" (Apple) - and will sit on BOD alongside production from DJ Klavicle, DJ Wicked, Prince Elwood Strickland and Trox. Award-winning poet and spoken word artist Kool Chief Rocker was one of three people stabbed in a 2017 hate crime on Portland public transit in which two men died when Rocker came to the defense of two women of color, one of whom was wearing a hijab. Micah was stabbed in the neck but survived. Chicago-born poet and emcee Mic moved to Portland after founding Anti-Racist Action, making him a lead figure in street wars between neo-Nazi skinheads and anti-racist youth in the Midwest in the 80’s and 90’s. Leading bands like Hungry Mob and Suckapunch before establishing his solo career, Crenshaw was 2001's Portland Poetry Slam Grand Slam Champion, a National Poetry Slam finalist, and was voted Portland’s Best Hip Hop Artist by Willamette Week in 2016. Mic co-founded GlobalFam, a non-profit project to create and maintain a computer center for disadvantaged youth in Burundi. Over 400 people have received free training. Mic also partnered with Education WithOut Borders (EWOB), which supports education, music and art initiatives in Portland and beyond and serves as an umbrella for the local Books For Prisoners chapter and GlobalFam itself. Mic's last solo release was Earthbound (miccrenshaw.com). Brink Of Distinction is set for a summer release.
